Bacterial indicators fail to detect a broad range of enteric viruses in water samples and involve lengthy culture-based methods requiring extensive material prep time, skilled staff and special equipment. On top of these shortcoming, current testing for bacteriophages (specifically coliphages) using the EPA and ISO methods, takes nearly 48 hours to perform including material prep time. Shortcomings in traditional faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) testing methods has led to new state-of-the-art use of coliphages as more accurate viral indicators.

Elisabet has 7 years’ experience as a researcher in Biomedine as well as 2 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry in drug late development phase and go-to market strategy and positioning. She graduated in Biotechnology and Biochemistry (UAB) and has a master’s degree and a PHD in Biomedicine (UPF) and an MBA (IESE Business School).

She has more than 7 years’ experience assessing microbiological quality of water, as a researcher as well as in the industry. PhD in Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology (University of Barcelona), her thesis entitled “Utilidad de los bacteriófagos y otros indicadores de contaminación fecal en muestras ambientales sólidas” assessed the capacities of bacteriophages as faecal pollution indicators in the water cycle.
